The military exercise served the purpose of "planning, preparation and conducting combat operations," but many defense analysts interpreted the show of military force to be a direct message to Ukraine and its Western allies regarding Russia’s control over the Crimean peninsula. The exercise was conducted at the Opuk training range on the Black Sea Coast with drills involving warships, aircraft and tanks, with Moscow firing its S-300 and S-400 missile systems. "On such a scale and with the deployment of different force groupings, such drills are being held for the first time," said defense ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov highlighting the unprecedented nature of the massive show of Russian military force. "This training range is the biggest on the Crimean peninsula, which allows for such exercises to be held." The drills were overseen by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and the head of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov as well as Crimean leader Sergei Aksyonov. "Strategic drills are essential to military training in Russia in 2016 with a focus on different troops working together. You should not twist this into anything – there’s no politics," explained Konvashenkov emphasizing that the drills should not be construed as a message to Russia’s neighbors despite the West’s rush to describe it as just that. The war games come one month after President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of sending a group of saboteurs into Crimea to engage in terror strikes against Russian personnel adding to Western suspicions that Moscow wants to make its control over the peninsula clear Read more: https://sputniknews.com/russia/20160911/1045183103/russia-crimea-war-games-military.html

Types Field exercise The more typically thought of exercise is the field exercise, or the full-scale rehearsal of military maneuvers as practice for warfare. Historical names for field exercises in the Commonwealth include 'schemes.' In a field exercise, the two sides in the simulated battle are typically called "red" and "blue", to avoid naming a particular adversary. Simulation Main article: Military simulation Other types of exercise include the TEWT (Tactical Exercise Without Troops), also known as a sand table, map or cloth model exercise. This type of exercise (in recent years assisted by computer simulation) allows commanders to manipulate models through possible scenarios in military planning. This is also called warfare simulation, or in some instances a virtual battlefield and in the past has been described as "wargames." Such examples of modern military wargames include DARWARS, a serious game developed since 2003 by the US DARPA agency with BBN Technologies, a defense contractor which was involved in the development of packet switching, used for ARPANET, and which developed the first computer modem in 1963... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Bragg Fort Bragg is a major United States Army installation, located in Cumberland, Hoke, Harnett and Moore counties, North Carolina, near Fayetteville but also borders the towns of Spring Lake and Southern Pines. It was also a census-designated place in the 2010 Census, during which a population of 39,457 was identified. The fort is named for Confederate general Braxton Bragg. It covers over 251 square miles (650 km2). It is the home of the US Army airborne forces and Special Forces, as well as U.S. Army Forces Command and U.S. Army Reserve Command... Cold War Following World War II, the 82nd Airborne Division was permanently stationed at Fort Bragg, the only large unit there for some time. In July 1951, the XVIII Airborne Corps was reactivated at Fort Bragg. Fort Bragg became a center for unconventional warfare, with the creation of the Psychological Warfare Center in April 1952, followed by the 10th Special Forces Group. In 1961, the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) was activated at Fort Bragg, with the mission of training counter-insurgency forces in Southeast Asia. Also in 1961, the "Iron Mike" statue, a tribute to all Airborne soldiers, past, present and future, was dedicated. More than 200,000 young men underwent basic combat training here during the period 1966–70. At the peak of the Vietnam War in 1968, Fort Bragg's military population rose to 57,840. In June 1972, the 1st Corps Support Command arrived at Fort Bragg. In the 1980s, there was a series of deployments of tenant units to the Caribbean, first to Grenada in 1983, Honduras in 1988, and to Panama in 1989. U.S. all Domains War Game in South Korea United States, and the Republic of Korea will kick off the largest war game in water surrounding the South Korea, beginning March 21, 2017. The exercises involved U.S. Navy ships assigned to Command Task Force (CTF) 30, and CTF 70, to strengthen maritime interoperability and tactics, techniques and procedures. This year additional surface, subsurface, and air assets joining the bilateral exercise include aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, Carrier Air Wing 2, Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Barry (DDG 52), USS Wayne E Meyer (DDG 108), USS McCampbell (DDG 85), USS Stethem (DDG 63), Los Angeles-class nuclear fast attack submarine USS Columbus (SSN 762), and P-3 and P-8 Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft from Commander Task Force 72. The exercises will consist of a routine bilateral training, subject matter expert exchanges, anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare drills, communication drills, air defense exercises, counter-mine planning and distinguished visitor embarkations. Rear Adm. James Kilby, commander, Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group said that this exercise is yet another example of the strength and resolve of the combined U.S. and the ROK naval force, the U.S. and the Republic of Korea share one of the strongest alliances in the world, and we grow stronger as an alliance because of our routine exercises here in South Korea, and the close relationship and ties that we forge from operating at sea together. His counterpart, Rear Adm, Choi, Sung-Mok, the chief of staff for the Republic of Korea Fleet said, that this defensive exercise focuses on enhancing the interoperability between the ROK and US navies, and helps both navies maintain a combined defense posture to protect the ROK from future North Korean unprovoked acts of aggression. USS Carl Vinson carrier strike group deployed to the region under U.S. 3rd Fleet command and control, including beyond the international dateline, which previously divided operational areas of responsibility for 3rd and 7th Fleets. Third Fleet operating forward offers additional options to the Pacific Fleet commander by leveraging the capabilities of 3rd and 7th Fleets. This operational concept allows both numbered fleets to complement one another and provide the foundation of stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. The U.S. Navy maintains a presence in the Indo-Asia-Pacific to help preserve peace and security and further our partnerships with friends and allies. Our forward presence contributes to freedom of navigation and lawful use of the sea, as well as furthers operational training and enables an exchange of culture, skills, and tactical knowledge.

A great video of the US Military putting on a show of force in military exercise. The United States Armed Forces are the military forces of the United States. CAMP CASEY, South Korea – For more than a month, Soldiers from the 210th Field Artillery Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division/ROK-U.S. Combined Division, trained alongside their joint and combined partners for their debut participation in the Republic of Korea Army’s Integrated Firepower demonstrations Aug. 7-28 near Pocheon, South Korea. The massive capability demonstrations were conducted for public viewing five times throughout the month and included a variety of assets from both the U.S. Army and Air Force. In addition to the tanks, helicopters and jets previously seen in the 2012 event, this year’s lineup showcased the brigade’s Multiple Launch Rocket Systems and Paladin self-propelled howitzers. “This is a unique opportunity for us because it allows us to practice with all elements of the Army alliance here in Korea,” said Maj. Elijah Ward, operations officer for 6th Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Regiment, whose battalion specializes in the MLRS platform. “This is an exercise where we can see what other units get to do, and we get to see how they all fit in the big picture.” Due to its unparalleled lethality, versatility and range, the U.S. Army has used the MLRS for nearly 27 years. The 210th Field Artillery Brigade maximizes its lethality with three dedicated MRLS battalions, all of which participated in the event. Success of the MLRS platform, in addition to working alongside their U.S. counterparts, has allowed the ROK Army to find the strategic value in the weapon’s utility and decided to use them for fire and counterfire operations within its own formations. “The MLRS is currently one of the strongest field artillery weaponry system,” said Lt. Col. Tae-Hun Kim, the battalion commander of 5000th Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Brigade, 6th Division. “It is a vital part of the defense of the Korean Peninsula.” “Even though it is our first time being in a part of the demonstration, but it is an honor to show our strength and procedures to the citizens of Republic of Korea,” added Kim. “Furthermore, participating this event with our sibling units made this exercise much more meaningful.” During the demonstrations, three launchers from each country’s Army shared tactical positions and targets. The ROK command post then received "call for fire" signal, which is then transferred to six MLRS crews simultaneously to fire at the same time, said Ward. Having successfully completed such an alliance-strengthening event with the ROK Army and spending every day for five weeks in the same compound with their ROK allies, the brigade’s crew members were able to establish a positive rapport and trust among their counterparts. In addition to reinforcing the mission essential skills of each Soldier, the brigade’s Soldiers educated themselves on the culture of the respective armies: How they think, operate and execute their missions. “There is something different when the Soldiers work and live next to each other,” said Ward. “It is this partnership that makes us strong. This exercise allows us to see that, we are partners in alliance.” In addition to firing the first U.S. rockets from the ROK range, troops also encountered a few more firsts, including the integration of live-fire exercises with multiple types of units among combined and joint partners. “In an artillery brigade, you only get to see artillery units,” said Ward. “We have learned a lot about how we use MLRS when we have troops maneuvering in proximal range and we have airplanes up in the sky.” Through maintaining and developing positive relationship between both field artillery units and their combined-joint partners, the alliance will be able to summon coordinated artillery fire power at any time of need. “I think the biggest thing here is establishing the relationship between ROK 5000th Battalion, and other maneuver units out here with our assets,” said Capt. Jason Yu, commander of Battery A, 6th Battalion, 37th FA Regiment, 210th FA Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division. “Seeing how it would look like in a coordinated scheme of maneuver. Learning about each other’s capabilities and movements out in the battlefield is the key component we learned so far.” “This exercise really demonstrates our capabilities in case of provocations from the north,” added Yu, a Chappaqua, New York, native. “It really shows the great firepower we have in defense of South Korea and how we operate together in the real environment.” Video Description Credit: Pfc. Troops from Australian Defence Force conducted a series of coordinated attacks as part of the culminating activity for Talisman Saber 17 at Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area, Australia. The three main battle groups making up the coalition ‘blue’ forces were given a series of objectives to clear from the static ‘red’ forces. Australian and United States soldiers fought side by side on both the blue and red teams. The Talisman Saber series of exercises is the principal Australian and United States Military Training activity focused on the planning and conduct of mid-intensity ‘high end’ war fighting. It is the largest combined, joint military exercise undertaken by the Australian Defense Force (ADF) and provides invaluable experience to ADF personnel to improve combat training, readiness and interoperability, exposing participants to a wide spectrum of military capabilities and training experiences. Nearly 100 U.S. and Philippine troops took part in a mock assault on a small island in energy-rich waters disputed with China on Wednesday (April 25), a drill Beijing had said would raise the risk of armed conflict. The exercises, part of annual U.S.-Philippine war games exercises on the western island of Palawan, coincide with another stand-off between Chinese and Philippine vessels near Scarborough Shoal in a different part of the South China Sea. China has territorial disputes with the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan across the South China Sea, each searching for gas and oil while building up their navies and military alliances. China said last week the drill would raise the risk of confrontation. Officers who participated in the exercises said the drill with U.S. troops was aimed at improving relations between the two countries. "We learned teamwork, established our friendship, enhanced our inter-operability, with our allies, the U.S. Marines," said Second Lieutenant Ferdinand Medina, Philippine Marines team leader in the assault drill. The Philippine troops' exercise director for naval forces events, said such a drill was routine. "This exercise is actually not in any way related to the incident that happened in Scarborough Shoal. It's a normal activity, conducted during Balikatan (Shoulder-to-Shoulder) Exercises, the aim of which is to enhance the inter-operability of both forces - the American forces and the Philippine forces," said Philippines Navy Captain Reynaldo Yoma. The U.S. Marines also denied that the exercises were a response to the recent stand-off. "Location (of the drill) is irrelevant. These exercises take place on a regular basis. This year it happens to be in Palawan. Speaking to my counterpart, here at the Marine Corps side, the planning for this took place months and months and months ago, prior to any events that are currently in the headlines," Ensign Bryan Mitchell, spokesman for the U.S. Marines, told reporters. The Spratlys are claimed entirely by China, Taiwan and Vietnam and in part by Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines. China, which claims the South China Sea based on historical records, has sought to resolve disputes bilaterally but its neighbours worry over what some see as growing Chinese assertiveness in its claims in the region.
